McGhee’s Motherwell lost to Hearts. HEARTS GRAB CONTROVERSIAL WIN
A controvesial own-goal by Motherwell skipper Stephen Craigan after 10 minutes was enough to give Hearts a 1-0 victory in their Clydesdale Bank Premier League clash at Fir Park.
Eggert Jonsson’s wayward drive from 25 yards, as Motherwell striker David Clarkson lay up the other end of the pitch with an injury to his head, was deflected past Graeme Smith by the luckless Irishman.
The Tynecastle defence remained mostly untroubled until late in the second half when ‘keeper Steve Banks was called upon to make crucial saves from Marc Fitzpatrick and Ross McCormack.
Hibernian tightened their grip on a top-six place courtesy of early strikes from Colin Nish and Steven Fletcher in a 2-0 win over Inverness.
Transfer window recruit Nish set the hosts on their way when he coolly placed the ball past Michael Fraser after just three minutes.
Fletcher then notched his 14th goal of the season after the home side brilliantly carved open the Inverness rearguard in a move involving Guillaume Beuzelin, Merouane Zemmama and Nish.
A Christian Kalvenes header that rattled off the crossbar was the closest Dundee United came to scoring as they were held to a goalless draw by Falkirk.
Kalvenes met a lofted cross from Darren Dods with a fine looping effort in the 21st minute, only for the ball to arc over the outstretched arm of Robert Olejnik and smack off the woodwork.
Falkirk improved during the second half with substitute Russell Latapy shooting just wide, but United will still believe they should have found a route to goal given the amount of opportunities they created.
